Cubist LiveThe maiden voyage of the "Cubist" band—an octet of artists playing music that grew from my studio CD—took place on April 23rd, 2010 at Ryles Jazz Club to a sold out house. With such a line-up of great international and local talent I knew the music and energy would be at its highest level. Professionally recording the release, and a concert at Amazing Things Arts Center, has allowed me to share the music in "Cubist Live". Now into the 30th year of a blessed career in percussion, I am living the dream of realizing my music in the hands of some of the greatest musicians and improvisers of our time. I am indebted to Randy and the band for stepping into the cube, and to you for reliving the experience on this disc. I was at once energized and completely hypnotized by the transfixing music of Cubist. Cubist is an exceptional unification of genres—jazz fusion, world, and rock. Led by percussionist/ drummer/ vocalist Jerry Leake and guitarist/ guitar-triggered synthesizer Randy Roos (both with an impressive and widely layered musical background in jazz and world), Cubist Live was for the most part recorded in April of 2010 at Ryles jazz club in Cambridge (a couple tracks were recorded at Amazing Things Art Center and New England Conservatory of Music). Though three songs clock in to more than 10 minutes each, I never once felt bored or restless. In fact, this CD seamlessly takes the listener on a world journey as the collection of African and Indian percussion and ambient sounds, along with American jazz, gives one the sense of escape. This menagerie of sounds soothes and inspires—at least for me it did. I'm a big fan of organic, percussive elements so the drumming and percussion in Cubist Live particularly grabbed me. Favorite tracks of the nine: "Aldebaran," "Caldera," and "Plan 9." Highly recommend checking out Cubist.Debbie Catalano, The Noise Rock Around Boston
The crew calls their music world-rock-fusion. We hear the world and fusion more than the rock and we hear players that know their stuff and are passionate about presenting it full force with the chops flashing front and center. Certainly, it's a genre skipping date that is all about the audio journey, which really doesn't fit comfortably under any labels but does kick ass. A sweet set for the open eared and arm chair traveler in need of some great, new kicks.

Jerry Leake's Cubist Band is not to be missed on the new disc Cubist Live. Bandleader Jerry Leake, a master percussionist, is joined by Randy Roos (guitars), Steve Hunt (keyboards), Stan Strickland (sax, flute, vocals), Brad Barrett (electric bass), Lisa Leake (percussion, vocals), Ben Paulding (drums, percussion), Marty Wirt (drums, percussion), Noam Sender (Turkish ney, zurna, vocals) and Mike Doud (tabla). Seven tunes of mostly originals including the stirring opener Aldebaran leave the listener mesmerized. There is much to enjoy here, and Leake's octet of New England-based artists recall Weather Report in sustained creative intensity. Highly recommended!

Cubist Live is essentially Cubist, the 2009 release, performed live and recorded during three concerts held during the course of the year 2010. Percussionist, Jerry Leake, is well-versed in percussion. Having studied all over the world, he currently is on the faculty at New England Conservatory of Music. This is where he gathered his band to make this album. All the performers on this release are New Englanders and they are all experienced in their own right. I didn't think I would like this after listening to the first track, which is pretty smooth. It continues in its smooth direction on the second and third tracks, both being heavy on flute and keys and sounding very 70's-80's cool jazz. Then track 4 began and I my interest was piqued. "Plan 9" starts out quietly with Noam Sender on the Turkish zurna. It gradually builds with kit drums and tabla and Noam's own vocals, giving it a decidedly middle eastern feel. "In From the Cold" retains an eastern feel with its tabla, but it also involves tenor sax, electric guitar and kit drums, making it a bit more post-rock. These songs toward the end of Cubist Live definitely left me liking this release a bit more than I thought I would, although the last track takes it right back to its smooth beginnings.

I recently received your Cubist Live and it immediately got good response on The Homegrown Music Show on WKPS in State College, PA. When I listened to it, I liked it immediately, too.

Cubist Band
Jerry Leake's 2010 CD, Cubist, represents a groundbreaking direction for contemporary music. Leake, a dedicated researcher and student of African and Indian musical traditions, has for decades explored the interlacing of world music with modern influences of groove, ambient, rock, and jazz. Cubist transcends the mere mixing of genres, instead combusting an entirely new class of music, creating sounds that will take repeated listening to fully grasp. The Cubist Band is an octet of New England-based talents, skilled in both classical and improvisational musicianship. Progressive adaptations of compositions fuel creative energy on stage and across audiences. Masters of groove and improv, the Cubist Band is available for international performances.
