Becoming a Musician

As with the practice of any musical tradition, the concept of discipline within one's practice is crucial for the development of the musician, not only on their instrument, but within the music with which to be performed. Indian classical music has long maintained the structure of the guru-shishya (guru - disciple) relationship for the passing on of the musical genius from master to disciple. This is not to be taken lightly and in today's modern era, this practice is still not only vital to development of the musician, but builds a solid foundation for the disciple to adhere to this same practice when teaching their skills and theories to the next generation of musicians. It is within this format that the ancient tradition survives even within contemporary applications of today's more modern artists.
